Brief History

Batangas State University started as a Manual Training School in 1903 under the supervision of an American principal, Mr. Scheer. The school was renamed Batangas Trade School in 1905 and through Republic Act 746 its name was changed to Pablo Borbon Memorial Trade School in 1953. The school became the Pablo Borbon Regional School of Arts and Trade and started offering technical courses in 1957. The regional school was converted into a state college by virtue of RA 5270 known as Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology in 1968. It was the 23rd state college of the country at the time of conversion. In 1971, the college first offered engineering courses with specialization in mechanical and electrical engineering. And finally, by virtue of RA 9045, Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology was elevated to Batangas State University in March 2001.

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is one of the oldest engineering programs offered by the university. The length of study for such a degree is now four years with two semesters every year. The program is under the College of Engineering, Architecture and Fine Arts (CEAFA) and was offered beginning the academic year 1972-1973 as stipulated in the Resolution Number 109 – D3, Series of 2008. The degree courses generally include units in engineering sciences, design and specific topics in civil engineering. Such topics cover most of the specialty divisions of civil engineering such as structural engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, construction and project management, geotechnical engineering and environmental engineering.

At present, the CE Program is awarded a Level IV Phase I status given by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (AACCUP). Also, the program successfully received full accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) – a US Based accrediting body, and from Philippine Technological Council (PTC), both from Washington Accord, in its delivery of outcomes based education.

Statement of Program Educational Objectives

The graduates of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering within three to five years after graduation shall:

  1. Specialist. Successfully participate as partners in nation-building in engineering projects involving structural, geotechnical, water resources, transportation and construction management; and
  2. Ethics and Professionalism. Adhere to professional, moral and ethical standards in the practice of civil engineering

Institutional Graduates Attributes

The IGAs are the qualities, skills and knowledge that the BatStateU community agrees its students should develop during the duration of their studies in Batangas State University. These graduate attributes outline the key competencies that will be developed by students.

IGA1: Knowledge Competence. Demonstrate a mastery of the fundamental knowledge and skills required for functioning effectively as a professional in the discipline, and an ability to integrate and apply them effectively to practice in the workplace.

IGA2: Creativity and Innovation. Experiment with new approaches, challenge existing knowledge boundaries and design novel solutions to solve problems.

Curriculum

Civil Engineering is a profession that applies the basic principles of science in conjunction with mathematical and computational tools to solve problems associated with developing and sustaining civilized life on our planet.

The Civil Engineering curriculum is designed to prepare graduates to apply knowledge of mathematics, calculus-based physics, chemistry, and at least one additional area of basic science, consistent with the Program Educational Objectives; apply knowledge of technical areas appropriate to civil engineering; conduct civil engineering experiments and analyze and interpret the resulting data; design a system component, or process in more than one civil engineering context; explain basic concepts in management, business, public policy, and leadership; and explain the importance of professional licensure.
